A couple of week ago I was told by a friend on Facebook, “you have an amazing way with words, analogies and making things make sense. You should be a journalist or something.” This compliment was very flattering as I tend to make a concerted effort to choose my words carefully and to try and say exactly what I mean. I also attempt to get people of all walks of life to understand what I’m saying. Now in my twenty-eight short years, I have learned that the latter can be a lost cause, but that doesn’t hamper my enthusiasm for trying… definition of insanity right?

Well, as I jostled this idea of journalism around in my head, I also remembered a promise I once made to myself. My promise to self was a simple one; to never work somewhere that made me inherently unhappy. As I thought more about it, I couldn’t help but know that journalism, in its traditional sense, would fall in that category. However as of late, I have been seeing more and more that there are not nearly enough sources out there giving intelligent, real world perspectives on things I deem to be important. These lines of thought led me to thinking , “what can I do?’ A plethora of ideas began swarming my mind; from hitting the streets with a literal soapbox to music and poetry. I even considered more regular and pointed Facebook posts or starting my own Facebook group. Ultimately it was decided That I can and will do all of those things, but I needed a springboard, a spark, a catalyst… thus we arrive at blogging.

So, fast forward to today, here we are; my opening announcement, my mission statement, my first official blog. Upon drumming up ideas for my blog, I wanted to ensure that I included a few mandatory aspects. I want to address popular issues, current news and the things that people are uncomfortable talking about. I also want to bring light to lesser known news, overlooked plights and make mainstream things that “they” don’t want “us” to talk about. I want to be engaging and inclusive; and by that I mean I want this to be an open forum that people would chime in thoughts and opinions in a civil, intellectual and progressive manner.

My blog will be interactive, meaning I want ideas from readers on topics that you are also interested in. Let’s bring everyone out and have an open dialogue about everything.

I know very well this crazy idea stands to also invite the trolls and those who would see to halt progressive thought and reform. This is a reality of online interactions that is not lost on me by any stretch, but I also know that to achieve the results I hope to achieve one must face the beast head on. That being said I encourage participation from all who have a voice or wish to have a voice. I would suggest that those who are easily triggered or who do not stomach conflict very well, to tread lightly. If you are a follower of mine on Facebook, then you know very well I can be direct, blunt and unapologetic, especially in social activism matters. You should go into my blog with the mindset that topics will be heavy, controversial, unrestricted and words will not be minced.

In this country, society is failing! Again I ask, “What Can I Do?”
